KSC – Kennedy Space Center, Orlando

Kennedy Space Center is America’s gateway to the Universe. It is the location from where man set off on a historic voyage to land on the moon and from where all of NASA’s missions are launched into Space.The Camp KSC programme at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center is a unique opportunity for students to connect with the future and learn an early appreciation for engineering, technology, science and space travel.During the three day camp at Kennedy Space Center students will:

  • work on innovative projects
  • participate in a day long astronaut training experience
  • meet a NASA astronaut who will share his/her experiences

NASA Educators will introduce the concept of space travel by guiding students through the early years of NASA during the Rocket Garden and Early Space Exploration Tour. Students will encounter and photograph the actual rockets, spaceships, spacecraft and spacesuits from the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programmes while hearing stories of early space heroes.

  • Presentation By An Astronaut
  • Students will have the opportunity of meeting an actual NASA astronaut, who will make a presentation about his / her experiences in space and the future of space exploration. Students are encouraged to ask questions and interact with their astronaut guest.
  • Astronaut Training Experience
  • Students will put into the shoes for an astronaut for a day. Using the motion based astronaut training simulators modelled after the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle Programmes, students will get to experience the training that astronauts do before they launch into space. Some of the motion based simulators include the Multi-Axis trainer, Micro-Gravity Wall and T-Chair (trajectory). After their training, students will participate in a full scale simulation of a space shuttle mission.
    Students will “Get Vertical” as they ride the Shuttle Launch Experience, an authentic flight simulator designed to replicate the thrill of launching into space aboard the Space Shuttle.
  • Projects
  • Students will be divided into small teams and will be presented with several engineering challenges. These include designing and building a truss structure similar to those that might be used aboard future spacecraft, designing and constructing a model rocket, designing a crew capsule that can safely land on the ground with a raw egg inside representing an astronaut.
  • Graduation Ceremony
  • The culmination of the three day education programme is the graduation ceremony. Each participant in the programme will awarded a certificate of completion.

  • Space Camp®, is a hands on, interactive programme to inspire, motivate and empower school students. The six day programme is conducted at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center’s® facility in Huntsville, Alabama. The U.S. Space and Rocket Center® is the Official Visitor Complex for NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, which plays a crucial role in propulsion, engineering, science, space operations, and project and programme management for NASA.
  • Space Camp is available for students from the ages of 9 to 18. The programme is age specific and has three variants.
    Space Camp®: For students between 9 – 11 years of age
    Space Academy®: For students between 12 – 14 years of age
    Advanced Space Academy®: For students between 14 – 18 years of age

Program Details: Space Camp® at Huntsville

  • At Space Camp® students won’t just hear about the work of astronauts and aerospace professionals, they will experience it first-hand! They will learn about spacecraft, aerodynamics, microgravity, robotics, rocket launching and extra-terrestrial travel through classroom sessions, practical activities, simulators and more. The culmination of the programme is a space mission that involves application of the knowledge they have gained and the training they have received during the course of the programme.
  • The programme will not only show students the practical applications of the concepts of science and mathematics but also develop their leadership, communication, problem-solving and teamwork skills through challenging outdoor activities.
  • As part of this programme students will participate in the following activities/sessions.
    • Lifting off at four times the normal force of gravity and experiencing weightlessness on the Space Shot TM simulator.
    • Learning how it feels like to walk on the moon with the 1/6 Gravity Chair simulator.
    • Building their own rocket and launching it from the Rocket Launch facility.
    • Tumbling and spinning in the Multi-Axis Trainer, just like astronauts from the early space programmes.
    • Experiencing a frictionless environment in the Manned Manoeuvring Unit
    • Lifting off in one of Space Camp’s Shuttle Simulators, or commanding and support everything from the Mission Control Center.
    • Living and working in Space Camp’s International Space Station simulator.
    • Mission Specialists will experience walking “in space” on an EVA (Extra Vehicular Activity) to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. (Space Academy and Advanced Space Academy only)
    • Living and working in space, operating the Station’s life support, crew/equipment support systems. (Space Academy and Advanced Space Academy only)
    • Performing scientific experiments focusing on polymers and soil samples from Earth, Mars, and the moon. (Space Academy and Advanced Space Academy)
    • In depth SCUBA training for Mission Specialist track trainees. (Advanced Space Academy only)
  • Accommodation
  • During the course of the Space Camp® programme, students will stay in dormitories on site of the programme. These dormitories are comfortable and well equipped and are designed to replicate the accommodation provided to astronauts.

  • Space School from Frontiers Edutainment is an intensive programme of learning and discovery, and a once in a lifetime opportunity for students to visit NASA’s Johnson Space Center.The programme is available in a three-day and five-day variant.
  • Students participating in this programme will spend three to five days at Space Center Houston, the official visitor’s Complex of NASA’s Johnson Space Center.
  • The Space School programme at Space Center Houston will bring to life the concept of science and maths that students have studied in their textbooks. During the programme students will :
    • work on innovative projects involving robotics and rocketry
    • meet NASA experts who will share their knowledge and expertise
    • take exclusive tours of the labs and facilities at NASA’s Johnson Space Center
    • make presentations to NASA educators
    • dive underwater to train like astronauts
    • watch space shows and space movies
  • Projects
  • The Space School programme at Space Center Houston will place students in the shoes of NASA scientists and engineers. Each group will be divided into five teams. Under the guidance of Space School instructors, student teams will have to replicate the stages of a successful NASA mission. They will have to design a functional robotic rover, design and launch a rocket, loft payload into space, and land the payload safely on the surface of another planet. These four activities are split into four different projects and each student team must compete to build the best robotic rover, rocket, lofting, device and lander.
  • Groups with older students will also participate in scuba diving activity conducted at a pool to replicate the experience of working in a micro gravity environment.

Program Details: Space School at Space Center Houston

  • NASA Tours
    • Students will get a rare opportunity to tour the Johnson Space Center and visit the training facilities of NASA astronauts. These include the Astronaut Training Facility and the Neutral Buoyancy Lab or NBL in short. The Astronaut Training Facility contains detailed and life size mock up of the Space Shuttle and International Space Station components. The NBL is the world’s largest indoor pool and has a replica of the International Space Station at the bottom of the pool. This lab is used to train astronauts in a simulated micro-gravity environment before they launch into space. Students may see astronauts training at both these locations. Students will also visit the Historic Mission Control and the rocket garden to see the famed Saturn V rocket.
    • NASA’s Johnson Space Center is the world’s capital of manned space flight. All NASA astronauts stay and train at the Johnson Space Center before their space missions. Students will also get an opportunity to participate in various interactive shows that are conducted at Space Center Houston. These include the “Living in Space” Show and the “Blast Off Theater”. These shows teach students about how astronauts cope with the difficulties of living in space and about NASA’s current missions, respectively.
  • Student Presentations(Five Day Space School Only)
    • With the objective of inculcating a spirit of teamwork and improving their communication skills, student teams will be required to make presentations on space related topics to the Space School instructors and their peers.
    • Each presentation is graded based on the content, delivery style and timing.
  • Graduation Ceremony
    • The graduation ceremony is the culmination of the week long programme of learning and adventure. In an elaborate ceremony, with a candle light dinner, each student receives a certificate from Space Center Houston and the winning team receives gold medals.
    • The highlight of the programme is a gala graduation dinner where students have the opportunity to show their talents. All participants receive certificates of achievement and the winning team receives trophies from Space Center Houston. The graduation ceremony is for the five day program only.
